Maine Samplers and Other Needlework

February 25, 2010

Maine State Museum, located in Augusta, features various needlework collections on its website. The site showcases 11 samplers completed during the 19th century; 5 hooked rug patterns from S. Frost and Company, which was based in Biddeford, Maine along with 2 rugs; and 10 quilts. All were made in Maine during the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries. The photos are all of very good quality but there is limited information about any of the pieces. Go to http://www.mainestatemuseum.com and click on the Collections tab on the left hand side of the screen. You must agree to the museum’s Terms and Conditions of Use after which you will be directed to the various collections.
