Aunt Ellen and Her Needlework

March 21, 2010

I picked up this catalog, Aunt Ellen’s Complete Book of Needlework, at an antique show I recently attended. It was published by Modern Handcraft, Inc.,  the same company responsible for Workbasket; a needlework magazine published from the mid 1930s through the mid 1990s. In this 40 page catalog were offered projects to make a variety of items popular in the late 1940s including tea towels, baby bibs, pillow cases and aprons. Because they were the “talk of the town”, another featured item was mother and daughter felt jackets. Designs to choose from included gladiola, gourd and pepper and Mexican Fiesta motifs. Very retro!! If you get the chance, take a look at these vintage publications. They truly are educational!
